First Sunday of 2023
Sunday 1st 2023
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact that the first day of the new year fell on a Sunday?! I don’t know why but it is just so satisfying that it is the start to a fresh week and entirely new year at the same time. I think that automatically sets us all up for a successful year.
Like I've said before, there isn’t a whole lot to do back home other than relax, but what better way to spend my first Self-ish Sunday of 2023. I didn’t even take a step outside the entire day. I wore comfy clothes and get this… I started a book!!! For those who don’t know me personally, this is huge! I have despised reading my entire life. I had to basically put myself in time out as a child to actually fill out my reading log for school. I would force myself to sit on the couch and read to the exact second I needed to each week. “Shelby everyone just lied on those anyways, you didn’t have to actually read, no one would have known”... ya I understand that, but I would have known. As a kid I had this wild thing going on where I physically couldn’t lie or I'd be ill. So trust me I got my reading in. Maybe that's why as I've gotten older I have never gotten into it. Seems like a personal issue that we don’t need to get into here haha!
Anywayssss, ya I have never been a huge reader, but towards the end of this past year I actually found some self care and entrepreneurial books that I made it through and actually, dare I say, enjoyed! Huge success! For Christmas I got a few more books in those categories that I really look forward to reading, but in addition to self improvement and work books, my sister got me a fictional book called “People We Meet on Vacation” by Emily Henry. I couldn't tell you the last time I read a book just for the story itself and not to learn something new. I was a little hesitant but when I woke up Sunday morning I plopped myself on the couch like the ‘good ole days’... (this time by choice), and dove right into it. To my amazement I actually really liked it. I’m not going to lie, it's a bit too relatable right now but I think that is what has me hooked.
The day carried on with a nice, long, midday couch nap. I don’t know what it is about falling asleep on the couch, you either sleep so damn well that you wake up wondering where you are and what day it is, or it's the shittiest sleep of your life and you are unable to move your neck for the next week. Only thing that beats a successful couch nap is a post shower towel nap. Tell me I’m wrong.
Me being the crazy organized color coding freak that I am, I spent the rest of the day planning my last semester of Senior year and everything that comes along with that. I filled my calendar with all my classes, work schedules, meetings, and personal life events. And of course I had my mom look over it to convince me that I won’t lose my mind with everything I have going on. I like staying busy but sometimes I get ahead of myself in the overbooking.
Side Note: It is always nice to have all your ducks in a row going into a new year. Some people plan more than others but either way it is comforting to know what you have in store moving forward. If you have set goals or new habits this is a perfect time to really think about how you want to go about them. I chose a few categories I wanted to focus on and elaborated a bit on each of those. You can choose whichever makes sense for you, but here are a few category ideas:
Mental Health
Physical Health
Work
School
Finances
Personal Life
Travel
Relationships
I like to add everything to a calendar and set reminders for important dates like: paying bills, work events, school presentations and tests. I also try to do a little budgeting to know what and how much I am able to spend on things throughout the month. This is all personal preference but it is what works for me in order to limit my stress and anxiety.
Another Side Note: I highly recommend taking a little time to create a vision board, they are super fun to do. You can either make them on paper by cutting out inspirational things you find in magazines and gluing them all together or you can make one digitally. This year I chose to make mine on Canva by finding things on Pinterest. I set it as my laptop screen saver to constantly keep me motivated!
Finished the night off by starting a new show on Netflix called The Recruit, while researching for my European Summer trip I plan on embarking on with the very little money I have to do so. But mark my words it will happen!!
Cheers to a self-ish 2023 everyone!! :)
